DMAIC Cycle
Five-phase framework of Six Sigma improvement: Define — Measure — Analyze — Improve — Control.
Also known as: DMAIC, improvement cycle
DMAIC is the standard improvement cycle for existing processes. Every phase closes with a tollgate — a decision checkpoint where the sponsor either endorses continuation or a course correction.
- D — Define — problem, scope, Voice of Customer, CTQs; deliverables: project charter and SIPOC
- M — Measure — validate the measurement system (Gage R&R), collect baseline data, measure process capability
- A — Analyze — hunt for causes: Pareto, Ishikawa, 5-Why, hypothesis tests, regression
- I — Improve — devise and test solutions: DoE, pilots, response optimisation
- C — Control — lock in the result: control charts, standard work, reaction procedures, hand-off to the process owner
