MATCEM (Field Types)

Six canonical fields of action: Mechanical, Acoustic, Thermal, Chemical, Electrical, Magnetic.

Also known as: field types, MATCEMIB, fields of action

MATCEM is the mnemonic for the six canonical field types TRIZ uses to describe any interaction: Mechanical, Acoustic, Thermal, Chemical, Electrical, Magnetic. Often extended by optical, gravitational and biological fields (MATCEMIB).

In substance-field analysis the field is the third element alongside tool and object. The order M → A → T → C → E → M is also a direction of development: electrical and magnetic fields are more finely controllable, faster and less wear-prone than mechanical ones — switching the field to the right is therefore a typical solution move.
