Project Charter

One-page contract between project team and sponsor — defines problem, goal, scope, team and schedule in the Define phase of DMAIC.

Also known as: project charter, project brief

The project charter is the first deliverable of the Define phase. It states the improvement problem so clearly that sponsor, team and stakeholders share the same understanding — and serves as reference for later course corrections.

  • Problem statement — what is bad today? Fact-based, without cause and without solution
  • Goal statement — concrete measurable target improvement (SMART criterion)
  • Business case — value in euros / time / quality; why does the project matter?
  • Scope (in/out) — what is in the project, what is explicitly not?
  • Team & roles — sponsor, champion, Black/Green Belt, subject-matter experts
  • Schedule — with the five DMAIC tollgates
