RACI Matrix
Assigns four kinds of responsibility to each task — Responsible, Accountable, Consulted, Informed.
Also known as: RACI, responsibility assignment matrix, RASCI
The RACI matrix clarifies for every project task who performs it, who owns it, who is asked, and who is kept informed. Tasks form the rows, roles or people the columns; each cell carries one of the four letters or stays empty.
- R — Responsible — does the work; several R are possible, but fewer is clearer
- A — Accountable — owns the outcome and makes the final call; exactly one A per task, not zero and not two
- C — Consulted — asked for input beforehand; two-way communication with subject experts
- I — Informed — told about the outcome; one-way communication
The real work lies in checking rows and columns: a row without an A has no owner, one with two A guarantees conflict. A column full of C blocks progress, and a person holding R in every row is a bottleneck.
