Resource Analysis
Inventory of all present substances, fields, spaces, times, information and functions — before any new component.
Also known as: resource checklist, resources, substance-field resources
Before a new component is invented, the resource analysis systematically inventories everything already present in the system, at its boundaries or in the supersystem. Experience shows the solution usually already sits among the existing resources — merely unused.
- Substances — materials, parts, waste, by-products, atmosphere, contaminants
- Fields — mechanical, thermal, chemical, electrical, magnetic, acoustic, optical, gravitational (MATCEM)
- Space — unused volumes, surfaces, gaps, cavities, contact areas
- Time — idle phases, transitions, pauses between cycles, lead and lag times
- Information — sensor signals, indicators, data that accrues anyway
- Function / energy — existing functions available for dual use; energy already flowing through the system
